33-year old Japanese pitcher Masahide Kobayashi has just signed a two year deal with the Cleveland Indians worth $6.25M with a $3.25M option for 2010.

The right-handed pitcher works in the high 80s to low 90s, and has a very effective split-finger pitch, according to scouts. The former closer for the Chiba Lotte Marines has racked up 227 saves in the Japan League, and is considered by some to be the best free agent reliever available this offseason. He was managed by former MLB manager Bobby Valentine, who is confident that he can compete in the majors. Critics think that his velocity and control are on the decline. Kobayashi will join an already strong bullpen featuring Rafael Betancourt and Rafael Perez, and provide some insurance for Joe Borowski, who could falter.
