Fantasyscope-fPAR: Mid-season update
Just thought I’d make a plug for the FantasyScope projections and fPAR analysis method. I am in 3 Yahoo! stadard roto leagues where I used my player rankings to draft, and here are their current performances:
Team 1: 1st place with 94.5 points, 14.5 point lead over 2nd place C: Matt Wieters*, Geovany Soto* 1B: Albert Pujols 2B: Chase Utley 3B: Casey McGahee*/Garrett Atkins* SS: Miguel Tejada* OF: Ben Zobrist*, Ryan Ludwick, Bobby Abreu, Carlos Beltran, Scott Podsednik* SP: Jered Weaver, John Lackey*, Wandy Rodriguez*, Ted Lilly, Joba Chamberlain RP: Brian Fuentes, Joakim Soria, Francisco Cordero, J.P. Howell*, C.J. Wilson* Team 2: 3rd place with 91 points, 5 points behind the leader C: Mike Napoli, Matt Wieters 1B: Carlos Pena 2B: Freddy Sanchez 3B: Scott Rolen, Casey Blake SS: Derek Jeter OF: Ryan Braun, Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran, Ben Zobrist*, Milton Bradley*, Scott Podsednik* SP: Javier Vazquez, Jered Weaver, Ted Lilly*, Derek Lowe RP: Jonathan Papelbon, Francisco Cordero, Rafael Soriano*, Joakim Soria, Matt Capps* Team 3 (Winners League): 1st place with 96.5 points, 10 point lead over 2nd place C: Matt Wieters*, Geovany Soto* 1B: Adam LaRoche* 2B: Ben Zobrist*, Ian Stewart* 3B: Scott Rolen* SS: Hanley Ramirez OF: Raul Ibanez, Nelson Cruz, Johnny Damon, Alexei Ramirez*, Shane Victorino* SP: Tim Lincecum, Jered Weaver, Rich Harden, Max Scherzer*, Jake Peavy, David Price* RP: Joe Nathan, Mariano Rivera, Rafael Soriano*, Joakim Soria
Starred players were not drafted, but taken off the waiver wire.
I know, these are Yahoo! leagues, but I’m pretty happy with how things are looking thus far. What can we learn from this? I drafted many of the same players in each league, who were undervalued according to our projections and fPAR. I’m particularly proud of Jered Weaver as a sleeper who worked out (I drafted him as low as the 19th round). Still, I also missed on many players and can’t credit this all to the projections.
As you can see, drafting well is good, but you have to keep an eye out for key pickups. I drafted Matt Wieters in only one of my leagues because he fell to the 9th round, yet I was always able to pick him up because owners didn’t have the patience to wait until he was called up. Every day when I set my lineup, I look to see who the drops were for that day. I never worried about waiver wire priority, but if I saw a guy who was dropped that could improve my team, I didn’t hestitate.
